Position - Geologist
Position Overview:
Seeking experienced geologists to support a continuous core drilling campaign at the Nevada National Security Site. This position requires working 13-hour shifts in a 24/7 operation, on site.

Location:
NNSS Area 27, Mercury, Nevada (approximately 65 miles northwest of Las Vegas)
Period of Performance – 90 Days
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Geology, Geoscience, or related field (e.g., Engineering Geology, Environmental Geology)
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in geological field work
  • Experience with core sample handling and documentation
  • Ability to work 13-hour rotating shifts in a 24/7 operation
  • Must be able to mobilize to site within 24 hours when needed
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Core Sample Management:
    • Place and orient core samples in core boxes according to retrieval alignment
    • Measure and record core lengths using English units
    • Mark core boxes with indelible ink, including run numbers and recovery data
    • Photograph all cores with proper documentation of markings and orientation
  • Core Analysis and Documentation:
    • Create detailed descriptions of core samples
    • Record run numbers, drilled intervals, and core recovery measurements
    • Perform Rock Quality Designation (RQD) evaluations
    • Document major and minor lithology changes
    • Maintain accurate field logbooks of all activities
    • Complete required field forms using provided computer systems
  • Sample Preservation:
    • Apply wax preservation to approximately 15% of core samples
    • Document preserved samples according to established procedures
    • Follow proper handling and preservation protocols
  • Quality Control:
    • Verify quality of previously logged core samples
    • Adjust run blocks as needed
    • Organize and maintain workspace cleanliness and safety
    • Create and manage computer documents according to project conventions
Working Conditions:
  • Work location is outdoors at NNSS Area 27
  • Extended periods of standing and physical activity
  • Must be able to work in various weather conditions
  • May require temporary demobilization during drilling delays exceeding 72 hours
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to lift and handle core samples and boxes
  • Standing for extended periods
  • Working in outdoor conditions
  • Manual dexterity for sample handling and preservation
Additional Requirements:
  • Must follow all site safety protocols and procedures
  • Maintain adherence to CONTRACTOR's Operating Procedures
  • Participate in required site safety briefings
  • Complete all required documentation and weekly status reports
Project Duration:
The project involves drilling to approximately 6,930 feet below ground surface, working with PQ™ size (4.83-inch outer diameter) and HQ™ (3.77-inch outer diameter) core samples.
