Position Summary:
The Staff Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive psychiatric care for adult forensic patients with complex mental health needs for a long-term inpatient facility. This role focuses on diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and participation in a multidisciplinary team to support patient recovery and legal disposition. The psychiatrist will also play an integral part in court-related evaluations and participate in the clinical oversight of treatment plans and psychiatric services.

Position Summary:
The Staff Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive psychiatric care for adult forensic patients with complex mental health needs for a long-term inpatient facility. This role focuses on diagnosis, treatment planning, medication management, and participation in a multidisciplinary team to support patient recovery and legal disposition. The psychiatrist will also play an integral part in court-related evaluations and participate in the clinical oversight of treatment plans and psychiatric services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage a caseload of approximately 40 patients across two forensic wards, providing psychiatric care in accordance with state, facility, and legal standards.
- Conduct psychiatric evaluations upon patient admission, discharge, annually, and at minimum monthly, with documentation of all clinical interactions and treatment updates.
- Treat patients with complex and chronic diagnoses including Schizophrenia, Schizoaffective Disorder, Mood Disorders, Personality Disorders, Substance Use Disorders, and Paraphilias.
- Monitor and address the legal statuses of patients, including those classified as Not Guilty by Reason of Insanity (NGRI), Permanently Incompetent to Stand Trial (PIST), Voluntary by Guardian (VBG), and Sexually Violent Predators (SVP).
- Prescribe medications, initiate therapy referrals, and coordinate consultations with other medical professionals as needed.
- Participate in weekly interdisciplinary treatment team meetings that include nursing, psychology, social work, pharmacy, recreation, dietary, and primary care staff.
- Serve as Psychiatric Officer of the Day (OD) approximately 2–4 times per week (weekday coverage shifts: 7:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m. and 12:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.).
- Optional on-call coverage available after hours, weekends, and holidays for additional compensation.
- Admit and discharge patients within the facility's long-term care model (average patient stays range from several months to longer durations).
- Participate in medical staff and case-specific meetings (approx. 6 times per year and as needed).
- Provide additional psychiatric services as credentialed, including:
- Oversight of Psychiatric Nurse Practitioners
- Individual, group, and family psychotherapy
- Substance abuse and behavioral therapies
- Guardianship evaluations
- Conditional/unconditional release evaluations and court testimony
- Medical Degree (MD or DO) from an accredited institution
- Board Certification or Eligibility in Psychiatry
- Active Missouri medical license or eligibility to obtain
- Experience in forensic psychiatry or inpatient psychiatric care preferred
- Strong clinical documentation, diagnostic, and treatment planning skills
- Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team environment
- Familiarity with legal frameworks and court proceedings related to mental health is a plus
